Arco, Idaho is located about 67 miles west of Idaho Falls, Idaho, at the junction of US Highways 20-26-93. Mackay is 26 miles north of Arco on Hwy 93.

The area is known as the Big Lost River Valley.  It is primarily a farming and ranching region, with close access to BLM and US Forest Service lands for recreation.  The population of Arco is about 1100 and Mackay is about 550.  The elevation of Arco is 5230, and Mackay is about 5900 feet. Mountains, up to 12,662 feet form the valley.

The Big Lost River flows down the entire length of the valley.  Mackay Reservoir, 2 1/2 miles north of Mackay, has great fishing and is used for boating and water skiing.

BLM and US Forest Service land comprises about 85% of the area.  There are high mountain lakes with trout, plus deer and elk hunting.

The Idaho National Laboratory is located on the desert, between Idaho Falls and Arco.  It is a major employer for the region.  Sun Valley is about 1 1/2 hours away.  Craters of the Moon National Monument is 17 miles from Arco.
